INSTRUCTIONS FOR VERIFICATION OF CITIZENSHIP

Anyone who was naturalized in Bridgeport, Hartford or New Haven between 1906 and October 1, 1991 and has lost or misplaced his/her original certificate of naturalization, may request verification of citizenship. All of our records have been sent to the Federal Records Center (FRC).

If someone wants to verify a naturalization record, they should send their request to the FRC with a $10.00 fee payable to the "National Archives Trust Fund." This fee applies to all requests whether it is for a lost certificate, genealogy research or for any other reason. This information cannot be obtained over the phone for the public.

The person making the request should include their name and a phone number where they can be reached between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. They must also have the Transfer and Location numbers in order to obtain verification. They must provide as much information to the FRC as possible: citizen's complete name and/or name change, date and place where they took the oath, their address at the time of naturalization, date and place of birth and, if possible, Petition Number and Certificate Number.

Anyone who was naturalized after October 1, 1991 must contact the Bureau of Customs and Immigration Services to obtain this information.

The only way a replacement certificate can be issued is through the Bureau of Customs and Immigration Services, which can take several months. The citizen must complete INS Form N-565 and there is a $155.00 fee. They should contact the Bureau of Customs and Immigration Services to verify this amount prior to sending their request. We have a supply of INS Form N-565 and you may give them this form.
